Jazz Improvisation Course by Andy Loveridge

Scalic or Model Improvisation
Which one? What's the difference?

So by now you should be happy with major scales or if you were reading them as a chord you would maj , maj7 or maj6 or maj9 after the key note (i.e. Cmaj7, Dmaj6 Ebmaj9)

We are now going to look at the 2nd modes (Dorian Minor) these are shown as a chord symbol with a m, m6, m7, m9 (i.e. Cm, Dm6, Em7 Fm9)

If you saw the chord symbol Dm then the (m) implies that D is the first note of the scale but is the second note of the key signature (Cmajor).

Therefore the Dm mode would be D, E , F, G, A, B, C, D

Work all the way around the cycle making each key a 2nd mode and work out each scale. I have written then scales out but again use them to check your answer, and again they should all sound the same!!!

Then once you have every key under your belt then apply those modes to the scale exercises that you used for the major scales!
