Jazz Improvisation Course by Andy Loveridge

Scalic or Model Improvisation
Which one? What's the difference?

Hopefully now you can understand how modes are made up and we are now going to look at 5 of the modes (I will cover the other 2 briefly but for now you wont come across them!)

Major Scales

To be able to start learning modes you need to know all 12 major key signatures!!!!!! (like being back at school!!)

I find the easiest way is to use the cycle of 5ths or 4ths this diagram tells you everything you need to learn all 12 major keys.

Each note represents a key signature I.e C major has no sharps or flats, Bb Major has 2 flats

If you work clockwise around from C then your next key is F which has 1 Flat the next is Bb which has 2 flats etc………

Anti clockwise is G which has 1 sharp, D which has 2 sharps etc……………..

Learn the order of the cycle don't learn flats and then sharps Start at C and work your way round don't do the flats and then start the sharps. Once you have the order memorised then all you need to know is what are the 7sharps in the key of C# ? You will see a small line in between F & Bb if you work clockwise around from Bb that will give you the order of the flats and if you work anticlockwise from F then this will give you the order of sharps.

So what are the 7 sharps in the key of C#?

F# C# G# D# A# E# B#

What are the 7 flats in the key of Gb ?

Bb Eb Ab Db Gb Cb Fb

I have written out all 12 scales but don't play them and memorise them use the circle and work them out use the sheet to check you answers. After a few you should start to here what a major scale sounds like? They all should sound the same (higher or lower but they should sound the same!!)
