Jazz Improvisation Course by Andy Loveridge

Scalic or Model Improvisation
Which one? What's the difference?

This is Scalic improvisation at its simplest you can continue with this exercise and try including other notes and see how they sound.

Most rock and rock and funk music is also based on 12 bar blues (normally in horrible sharp keys for the singers!!) so if that's the type of music you enjoy playing preserver with it!!!

Modal Improvisation

Modal improvisation is basically scales taken from another key signature. This style of improvisation can become very complicated but initially these exercises should get you going.

A major scale is made up of 8 notes I.e C D E F G A B C

Starting on the 1st note and playing to the 8th note will give you the major scale. If you start on the second note and play up 8 notes from there it will give you a very different scale (even though you are using the same notes!!!) again if you started on the 5th note and played up 8 notes you will again get a very different sound. These are modes of the scale all have there own name but I prefer to refer to them with numbers I.e. starting on the 2nd note of the scale (I.e D) would be the 2nd mode you can learn the names as many jazzers refer to them but for now its not essential. See below the diagram which shows each mode of the key of C Major.
