Introduction

Either you have been taught by me or involved with one of my groups. The are so many good publications about on improvisation and I've put together what I think is the most straight forward and understandable method. Improvisation is not a skill you are born with or suddenly you can do it is exactly learning a new skill, remember back to how long it took you to get comfortable with you instrument and the amount of time it took, well prepare to feel like your back at square one again, and don't think just because you can play that means you can improvise. It is just like being able to talk but that doesn't mean you can read

Improvisation is 99% hard work and only 1% natural ability, so with that in mind no one has any excuse not to be able to improvise but it does take a lot of hard work!!

Improvisation is an aural skill and the only way to create your own solos is to listen to other people! They are not just showing off but they are giving you ideas that you can use, listen to as much music of your chosen style as you can! You can never listen to enough!
